This is really cool! Not sure what it is either, but based on the hooked contraption on the end, I'd guess it was used to lift hay bales or logs (???) over the fence...totally guessing here! ;o)
That's weird... before I saw Don's post I was thinking trebuchet also. I guess there is no counter weight. Nice picture, I like that you captured all that sky.
Guys! - in the description she said it's for LIFTING hay - not for launching it at marauding Indians attacking the fort. Although the image of Mormons in 1860's Utah launching bales of hay with a trebuchet is kind of cool. They should make a movie about it....
I saw this documentary on PBS about building a trebuchet once that was really interesting..... Some modern day engineers, history geeks, and woodworkers went and built two of them to attack a mock castle wall... Check out the link by clicking my name.......
