I see there are different takes on the lighting. I think what needs to be explained is that SoCal has its own kind of sunlight. It is very intense and bright white. You can't avoid that. So the fact that you got everyone in the shade with the light around them is great in my eyes.
I hadn't thought of it, but what Monique says about the light here is true. If you're farther north you get your sun at more of an angle. Here I have very few hours where the sun isn't intense, except in the "winter" months.
