A Little Bit of Serendipity
As I was climbing up the stairs to get to my apartment, I looked down through the steps and saw these bright little mushrooms growing in the landscaping below. I have seen them before along other paths, but never when I had my camera handy or the time to take a decent picture. Spying these through the stairs was a fortunate discovery. The next trick was how to go about photographing them. First I tried resting my camera on the sidewalk and zooming in. The result of the long focal length was a very narrow depth of field. Click here to see the result of the first attempts. Then I moved in closer. I set a piece of paper on the ground next to the mushroom and rested my camera on it so as to avoid getting it all mucky. Then I set my camera to super macro and took the above picture. Later I did a little cropping to make the mushrooms stand out better. I think both pictures are pleasing, but I chose this one for the overall color. Then again, maybe I like the other one better.

i am a mushrooms lover thanks
I love this picture - it looks like an illustration for a children's book!
Natalie, I just love your eye. Especially the serendipity of mushrooms under the stairs, your family reflected in the window. The swing is exquisite. And I have to wonder if the sink was winking? :-)
IMHO, the difference between the two 'shroom shots is not really the depth of field so much as the color: the one you chose has the green in the upper background, which I think actually makes the orange cap stand out that much the more. The one you didn't choose has a monochromatic quality that seems to take away from the cap.
Then again, I know squat. All I take pictures of is hands. :-)
